BANKS – Much is happening at the Banks Public Library in October, stretching from yoga lessons to building confidence by reading to a nonjudgmental audience, Marlena the dog.
Coming up immediately is the Friends of the Banks Library fall book sale, starting on Thursday, October 3 and running through Monday, October 7 in the Jane Moore Community Room at the Banks Public Library.
Purchases at the sale benefit the nonprofit friends group, which purchases books and supports a variety of programs at the library.
The book sale hours are as follows:
Thurs, October 3, 3 to 7 p.m.
Fri, October 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sat, October 5, 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
Sun, October 6, 12 to 4 p.m.
Mon, October 7, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
2019 Reading Challenge Book Group
On Friday, October 11 at 1:30 p.m., those interested in participating in the monthly themed 2019 Reading Challenge can gather to read a book by an author from a continent other than North America.
Yoga
Starting October 12, the Banks Public Library will feature free yoga classes three days a week, taught by Gregg Hendrix.
Vinyasa yoga, a ‘flowing pose’ style of yoga according to library staff, will be taught Mondays from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., while Yin yoga, a style featuring mostly seated poses, will be held Tuesdays from 5:35 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Reiki Energy classes will also be Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:25 p.m.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat, but some will be available to be lent out.
All classes are open to all levels of experience.
Read to a dog!
Yes, that’s right. On Tuesday, October 15, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., Marlena the dog will be at the library, where anyone can read to her. The event is geared toward those might want to build their confidence — after all, dog’s don’t judge — in a stress-free environment.
Art lab for elementary students
Students will explore painting to music in the style of Kadinsky on Wednesday, October 16 at 3:15 p.m. Come dressed for (washable) paint.
Workshop Wednesday: Making Masks
This free event on Wednesday, October 23 at 3:15 p.m. is geared toward students age 8 to 14 years old. It’s a free-form event around the theme of making masks using a variety of provided supplies.
Cyber Security Tips
October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the library will celebrate with a presentation on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. by a local expert on what individuals can do to keep their electronic information safe.
Teen LitFest
At the Jessie Mays Community Center in North Plains, an event for teens will give interested readers a chance to meet New York Times bestselling author Renee Watson.
The event, held Thursday, October 24, begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Jessie Mays Community Center is located at 30975 NW Hillcrest Street in North Plains.

Craft Night, second Wednesday of the month, 6 p.m.
