Free Comic books await at the Banks Public Library May 7

The Banks Public Library is presenting Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The annual Free Comic Book Day takes place on the first Saturday of May in “specialty shops” throughout North America, and at some international locations.

Comic books are given away free to anyone who visits one of the events, said Susan Cackler, supervisor and program coordinator at the Banks Public Library.

“The program also partners with libraries that are in areas without easy access to an independent comic book store,” she said. “This is the first time that the Banks Public Library has participated.”

Since 2002, Comic Book Day has grown into the industry’s biggest day of the year, and in larger locations, a lot of merchandise is sold to go along with free comic books.

This year, titles include the likes of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Doctor Who, Marvel, and Red Sonja, according to FreeComicBookDay.com.

“Since the Banks Public Library is not a (comic book) store, we are limited to giving away what we are gifted from the Free Comic Cook Day folks,” Cackler said. “We are offering this event as a way to give access to come fun material for our patrons and so support the local comic book industry. We are actually having a different library program that day, which will be using all available staff and space, so the Free Comic Book Day is literally just that – come and get your book while they last, one per reader.”

The event is facilitated by a panel that represents “all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and (distributors),” the website says.
