Obituary: David William Schmidlin

David William “Dave” Schmidlin, 74, a longtime resident of the Banks community recently of Forest Grove passed away on Saturday morning, February 16, 2019 at his home.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary was said at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2019 at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church; 39135 NW Harrington Rd in Roy, Oregon.

Funeral Mass followed at 7:00 p.m.

Rite of Christian Burial will take place at St Francis Catholic Cemetery in Roy, OR.

Dave was born on July 21, 1944 at Camp McGreggor, OR. He was the youngest of two children born to Ambrose and Veretta (Shepard) Schmidlin. He was raised in the family home in Buxton and attended primary school at Buxton Elementary. He attended Banks High School and graduated with the Class of 1962.

He started dating his future wife, Karen Krieger, while in high school and they married on February 13, 1965 at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy. They made their first home in Buxton and later moved to Greenville Rd in Forest Grove until 1976 when they built a home on Green Mountain Rd in Banks. They lived there until 2015 when they moved to their current home in Forest Grove.

Dave worked in the woods all of his life. He started as a young man, working with his father Ambrose in the family business. Dave was a logger and spent many years cruising timber. He retired in 2008.

Family was very important to Dave. He was always at all the activities, whether as a Dad, Coach or Papa. He umpired baseball for several years and was a member of the Portland Umpire Assoc. Dave spent many years on the Banks High School Board. He loved to fish and was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed his trips to Canada for moose hunting. Dave enjoyed playing cards, swapping stories with lifelong friends and road trips to Reno. Karen and Dave traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, and Reno. He was an excellent cook and loved to share his smoked fish with his family and friends. Dave was a man of his word and he instilled the values of hard work, honesty and love to his children and grandchildren.

Dave always had stories to share that usually included a life lesson. He would make you laugh with his jokes and takes one with him that only he could tell.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kenny.

He is survived by his loving wife; Karen, five children; Linda Wright of Hillsboro, Carol Schmidlin of Beaverton, Gus and his wife Kerry Schmidlin of Hillsboro, Eduardo Bernardes and his wife Andrea of Calgary, Alberta, Terri Schmidlin of Beaverton, a sister; E. Elaine S. Stewart – Harris and her husband; Greg Harris both of Portland, and seven grandchildren; Hana, Tyler, Sarah, Emily, Ryan, Cole and Nate.
