Banks – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is offering hunter education classes at Banks Fire District #13 starting on Tuesday, February 26.

The classes will continue on February 28, March 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, and 22 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. A field day where students will participate in a live-fire exercise and practice other skills will be held on March 9th from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Hillsboro Trap & Skeet.

The cost to register is $10, and requires preregistration to attend.

Hunter education classes are required for youth under 18 who wish to hunt, and adults are encouraged to take classes as well, according to ODFW. Topics covered during in the class include firearm safety, hunter ethics, wildlife management and identification, hunting preparation and techniques, survival skills, and introductory bowhunting.

Hunters can also receive their hunter education certificate by completing an independent study course from a workbook or online instead of a conventional classroom experience; youth hunters will need to attend a field day in addition to the study course to receive their hunter education certificate.

All classes and field days are taught by certified volunteers, according to ODFW.

To sign up for a class, follow the links to login or create an account to register for the $10 class.

Due to a major redesign in the ODFW website and licensing system, participants can no longer sign up for a class at a license sales agent, though other products—licenses and tags, for instance— can still be purchased at an agent’s location. This includes the Buxton Feed Co., Snack Jack’s in Manning, the Forest Grove Bi-Mart, and at Vernonia Hardware and Supply and Vernonia True Value Hardware.
